Survey of Brucellosis in Slaughtered Hogs

Abstract
Submaxillary lymph nodes of 5000 hogs slaughtered in a large Chicago packing plant were cultured for Brucella. Of 35 isolations obtained, 10 were B. abortus. 11 were B. melitensis. and 14 were B. suis. Isolations of all 3 spp. were well distributed over the 6 months'' sampling period. Brucella agglutination tests performed on 1008 hogs showed agglutinins present in a titer of 1/20 or higher in 40.28%, and in a titer of 1/160 or higher in 6.45%. The significance of these findings in relationship to exposure of packing-house workers and the public health importance of the repeated isolation of B. melitensis are discussed. B. abortus was isolated from hogs for the first time in this investigation.
