Abstract
An experiment to extract partial structure factors for liquid hydrogen chloride at 24°C and density 13.8 × 1027 molecules m-3, using neutron diffraction and isotopic substitution in both hydrogen and chlorine atoms, is presented. The results, which are thought to be more accurate than an earlier experiment on hydrogen chloride gas [1], are compared with recent simulations of the liquid [2, 3]. It is shown that partial structure factors provide an important test which allows one to distinguish between different models of the intermolecular potential. Keywords
