Abstract
Earlier versions of the SYMBAL system have been operable on the CDC 1604 since 1965 and on the CDC 6000 computers since 1968. In confrontations of different systems (see footnote), SYMBAL has compared well with general purpose systems, including FORMAC, but has been slower than specialised polynomial systems. In judgements and measurements of the effort needed to obtain a working formula manipulation program for given problems, SYMBAL has repeatedly appeared in first rank. This conforms with the design goals which put heavy emphasis on the user aspects of the system.
