Abstract
Samples of the blood from pregnant women shortly before delivery, placentas at full term and cord blood were analysed for fluorine. All the women used the same water supply which contained 0.5-0.6 ppm fluorine. It was found that the mean fluorine values of the placental tissues 0.15 ppm) were significantly higher than in the cord (0.11 ppm) or maternal blood (0.09 ppm). The results indicate that fluorine accumulates in the placenta which might play an active role in the fluorine transfer from the maternal blood to the cord blood. Keywords
