EFFECT OF HYPOPHYSECTOMY, DDD TREATMENT, AND SURGICAL TRAUMA ON THE OXYGEN CONSUMPTION OF THE VARIOUS ZONES OF THE ADRENAL CORTEX1

Abstract
Rate of O2 consumption/ hundred mg. of the zona glomerulosa and the zona fasciculate of the adrenal cortices from 3 groups of dogs was measured. It was observed that the rate of O2 consumption of the adrenal cortices from dogs 5 days posthypophysectomy and from dogs which were subject to stress in the form of surgical trauma were both normal and both gave the usual increase in rate of O2 consumption when ACTH was added to the slices in vitro. Rate of O2 consumption of the atrophying tissue of the adrenal gland from a dog under influence of DDD was normal but did not increase in the usual manner when ACTH was added.
