Abstract
The background and developments in Dutch forensic psychiatry since the Second World War, particularly in the field of assessment prior to trial, are described. In particular the work of the Pieter Baan Centre, a national unit providing reports to the courts on the dangerous criminal, is used to provide an insight into a system which has implications for developments in UK forensic psychiatry services. Keywords
