Photodegradable Plastic Mulch in Central New York

Abstract
A “sandwich technique” was designed to study the degradation of plastic mulch film in the soil. Polyethylene films, formulated to several levels of photodegradability, and regular (nonphotodegradable) films were exposed to natural solar radiation (sunlight) for 30 days, removed, buried and covered with 6 inches of soil. No significant amount of degradation was found when retrieved 32 months after burial. When exposed to sunlight, the photodegradable plastic mulch films degraded either much faster or much slower than described by the supplier.
