Abstract
The Seebeck coefficient of Bi–BiI3 melts was measured over the complete composition range from pure BiI3 to pure Bi. Results at 400°, 450°, 500°, and 550° are reported. Absolute Seebeck coefficients ranging from —53 to +125 μV/°C were encountered, the data exhibiting a maximum at about 40 mole % Bi and minima at approximately 10 and 85 mole % Bi. The results, interpreted in the framework of irreversible thermodynamics, are consistent with metallic electrical conduction in the metal‐rich compositions and a mixture of conduction by ions and electron exchanges in the salt‐rich and intermediate compositions. Keywords
