Abstract
The effect of standing waves along the laser cavity in DFB lasers is shown to be equivalent to a space-dependent nonlinear gain compression. A simple formalism is presented for analytical treatment of the effect, based on a Green's function approach, and expressions are derived for the small-signal modulation responses in the presence of standing waves. It is found that standing waves may make a significant contribution to the total nonlinear gain coefficient, but the modulation responses will still be governed mainly by the spatial holeburning associated with the envelope of the intensity.Keywords
