Abstract
Effect of petroleum oil on the respiratory activity of eggs of Grapholitha molesta and length of time an oil must be in contact with the egg to prevent hatching were studied. With the use of specially designed flasks with the Warburg manometer, oil was found to immediately reduce the respiratory rate with a quick recovery to a rate still below normal. The oldest eggs were least susceptible. A rather precise relationship existed between the duration of contact of eggs with oil and the hatch which followed. Some indication that the eggs produce a toxic gaseous metabolic product during development was obtained. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
