Abstract
This field experiment was designed to increase the social interaction of nursing home patients through a planned program of recreational therapy. The program was introduced in two different homes and continued for different time periods in these homes. A slight, temporary increase in social interaction was produced. Perhaps the most significant finding is the discovery of considerable hostility, mistrust, and overt conflict between patients. In addition to an analysis of the functional value of conflict in such a situation, more attention must be given to the ways in which therapy sessions may actually increase the level of interpatient conflict. Keywords
