Senescent forgetfulness: A quantitative study

Abstract
Eighty‐eight healthy elderly participants 60 to 90 years old were tested on a variety of measures of cognitive function and verbal, visual, and remote memory. Data analysis by age‐residualized score patterns and cluster analysis yielded subgroups (10% to 20% of the total sample) who exhibited reduced memory efficiency with otherwise preserved cognitive abilities. Although memory efficiency was reduced, these subgroups performed at a significantly higher level than a group of patients with Alzheimer‐type dementia. The participants with a specific decline in memory disproportionate for their age displayed features consistent with Krai's description of benign senescent forgetfulness.
