SUGGESTED USE OF RECTAL BIOPSY IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF NEURAL LIPIDOSES

Abstract
The histochemical properties of nerve cells of the myenteric plexus in five forms of neural lipidosis (Tay-Sachs infantile amaurotic idiocy, Hurler's disease, Niemann-Pick disease, Jansky-Bielschowsky early juvenile amaurotic idiocy, and Spielmeyer-Vogt late juvenile amaurotic idiocy) are presented. These data, in conjunction with clinical features and other histologic properties of the colonic wall, provide a basis for the use of rectal biopsy in tile diagnosis and differential diagnosis of tile neural lipidoses.
