NEUROPEPTIDES AND THEIR ROLE IN PAIN AND ANALGESIA

Abstract
A variety of oligopeptides [enkephalins, endorphin, substance P, neurotensin, bombesin, vasopressin, bradykinin, cholecystokinin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, angiotensin II and TRH] have been localized in the nervous system. Some of these neuropeptides appear to play a role in the perception of pain and also may mediate analgesic mechanisms. Basic and clinical neuroscience relevant to these neuromodulators is reviewed.
