Riddles in Bantu

Abstract
Riddles are part of the culture of a people, and therefore are often surrounded with taboos. There are many riddles in different Bantu languages which are so alike that it is probable that they have a common origin, but this is not always easy to prove. Riddles are educational because of their varied content, but their primary aim is recreational. They refer to nature as a whole, and to the material and spiritual culture of the people. A great variety of structures, both in the “question” part and in the answer of the riddle, including rhythm and balance of forms, are among their characteristic features.
