Abstract
Recipient heifers (39) were slaughtered at 27-30, 31-40, 41-50 or 51-117 days of gestation and 13 were allowed to calve to determine embryonic survival after bilateral egg transfer. No difference in survival rate at any stage was noted. Degenerate embryos were mainly found at early stages and indicated embryonic mortality before day 27. Single embryos were slightly heavier at each gestation stage although this difference was not marked until calving. The embryonic survival rates were 86%, 83%, 83%, 75% and 81%, respectively, for gestation stages (days) 27-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-117 and calved. Once pregnancy is established, uterine capacity does not limit the cow''s ability to carry twins provided they are located in separate uterine horns.
