Professional CM: The Architect-Engineer's Viewpoint

Abstract
The professional construction management form of organization is gaining increased usage because of distinct advantages offered on certain types of projects. The paper examines the viewpoint of the architect/engineer serving as a member of the CM team under this delivery system. The role of the A/E, including differences in A/E performance as contrasted with the traditional form of project organization, is considered in detail. Key A/E tasks during each phase of the project are identified. Elements of effective A/E performance, including responsiveness, responsibility, field organization, and design documents are analyzed. The writers conclude that the potential benefits of this project delivery system can be best realized by a precise definition of the A/E role. The A/E must be both aware of differences in performance under this system and receptive to construction input from the CM. Practical application of the concepts presented from the A/E viewpoint lies in avoidance of common problems on CM projects and the full support of the PCM team.
