Abstract
A curious type of dimpled injury noted on apple fruits in Eastern New York orchards was identified as that caused by feeding and oviposition activities of the tarnished plant bug, Lygus pratensis. The injury is caused during a period extending from the time the blossom stems separate in the clusters until the apples are about 1/2 inch in diam. The injury seldom renders the fruit unmarketable, but the blemishes may relegate it to inferior grades. Field control expts. conducted in 1938 indicate that certain carefully timed repellent sprays and dusts will reduce the amount of injury caused by this pest. Photographs are presented which illustrate the types of injury caused by this bug, and which also serve to aid in differentiating this injury from somewhat similar injuries caused by certain other insect species present in Eastern New York apple orchards.
