Periodic Outbursts of Antisocial Behavior

Abstract
I. Introduction THIS PAPER reports a study of antisocial behavior among hospitalized adolescents. A detailed study seemed indicated when it was recognized that many of the problems caused by adolescent patients could be understood as part of a social process: the upset of a delicate administrative balance between smooth daily routine and attempts to meet patients' psychological needs. Solutions to management problems were often difficult due to a lack of precise information, particularly regarding the effects of various types of misbehavior on the hospital's social system. In order to obtain the needed information we decided to design a method for the study of antisocial behavior in an institutional setting. This report specifies our hospital's social setting, describes the method for measuring antisocial behavior, details the pattern of antisocial behavior during a relatively normal period, and discusses the relationship of social factors to individual patients.
