Abstract
In vitro synthesis of cholesterol and fatty acids from precursor acetate-2-C14 was measured, using the parotid glands of 22 Wistar rats, 8 of which received an intraperitoneal injection of 1 [mu]c of Ca45Cl2, and 6 of which received an intraperitoneal injection of NaHP32O4 The parotid glands of animals that received the Ca45 produced more de novo synthesis of both fatty acids and cholesterol. There was no difference in lipogenesis, cholesterogenesis, or Ca45 uptake in the right and left parotid glands. Pathologic changes occurred in the parotids of those animals receiving the Ca45. No effects were found on the salivary glands of the P32 and nonradioactive calcium-treated animals. Keywords
