Abstract
In this approach to symmetry breaking we adopt the point of view that perturbation theory may be used to calculate the corrections to the coupling constants. The symmetry breaking is introduced via Gell-Mann-Okubo mass splittings of both the internal and external lines of the third-order vertex diagram. In this manner we obtain coupling constants which obey the sum rules of Gupta and Singh. This approach seems consistent with the notion that the Gell-Mann-Okubo formulas are themselves based on first-order symmetry breaking in the masses. Our results are compared with those of other authors.
