STUDIES ON THE ELECTRICAL STUNNING OF DOGS

Abstract
The effect on dogs of direct current ranging from 10 to 110 volts and interrupted at a rate of 6000 to 10,000 times per min. was studied. The ratio of duration of current flow to duration of interruption varied from 1:10 to 3: 10. Such currents, when passed through the brain, markedly decrease blood pressure (stimulation of cardio-inhibitory center) and arrest respiration, but the loss of consciousness is not due to cerebral anemia. Anesthesia lasts 2-12 minutes after withdrawal of current. Evidence for the loss of consciousness was strongly presumptive. Rigidity accompanies the passage of the current. Passing the weaker currents between lumbar and cervical regions caused analgesia with some rigidity in some dogs. No disturbance of function followed repeated application.
