Reliability Testing Of Fused Couplers

Abstract
Reliability testing was performed on 3dB couplers manufactured by the Gould Fiber Optics Operation. No significant change in coupler performance was observed during the tests. The maximum change in coupling ratio during repetitive temperature cycling from -40°C to +85°C averaged only 1.6%. Following 250 cycles between -40°C and 85°C, the coupling ratio and polarization sensitivity remained within 0.8% and 0.3%, respectively, of their initial values. The coupling ratio also remained constant to within 1% when measured periodically during a 1500 hour, damp heat test conducted at 65°C and 85% relative humidity. Couplers were also subjected to vibrations from 10-5000 Hz at 9g's and shocks up to 2500g's. During these tests the coupling ratio remained constant to within 1%.© (1989) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
