Stereoselectivity in the oxidation of sulphoxides to sulphones in the presence of Aspergillus niger

Abstract
Sulphones can be formed when sulphoxides are kept with a growing culture of Aspergillus niger. Partial oxidation of some racemic sulphoxides gives recovered sulphoxides that are optically active. In one case where this is possible, an optically active sulphone is also produced.
