Kinetics of Salicylate Elimination by Newborn Infants of Mothers Who Ingested Aspirin Before Delivery

Abstract
The metabolic fate and elimination kinetics of salicylate have been investigated in four newborn infants of mothers who ingested aspirin within 20 hours before delivery. Up to 2.3% of the dose taken by the mother was recovered from urine of the neonates. Salicylate was eliminated mainly by conversion to the glycine and glucuronic acid conjugates. The capacity of these pathways was very low and elimination of salicylate by the newborn infants was, therefore, much slower than in adults.
