Single Crystal Electron Spin Resonance Of Low Spin Co(II) And Of Cu(II) Schiff Base Complexes

Abstract
Single crystal e.s.r. studies have been done on N,N′-ethylenebis(o-aminobenzylideniminato)nickel(II) and N,N′-ethylenebis(benzoylacetoniminato)nickel(II) doped with the corresponding Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes. It is shown for the cobalt(II) complexes that the unpaired electron is in a dyz orbital and that the d orbitals are arranged [Formula: see text]in order of increasing energy with the [Formula: see text]and dyz orbitals being close together. The large energy separation between the dxz and dyz orbitals which is found in the cobalt(II) complexes is not observed in the corresponding copper(II) complexes. 14N hyperfine constants were measured for both copper(II) complexes.
