Abstract
It was the purpose of the study to test the hypothesis that the ratio of reactivity of an upper body site to a lower body site is significantly associated with the relative size or importance attributed to each of these sectors in the body schema. This hypothesis reflects the general viewpoint that the individual learns to assign different values to the various sectors of his body and that such values may influence the reactivity of the sectors involved. Skin resistance was used as the measure of physiological reactivity. The body schema measure of relative size attributed to the upper body sector in relation to the lower body sector was obtained by having each subject indicate in a dark room when the space between 2 luminous rods was equal to the difference between the width of his shoulders and the width of one leg. There were 162 subjects (63 male and 99 female). Overall, the results were significantly supportive of the hypothesis. Keywords
