PRODUCTION OF CONTROLLABLE APNEA IN ANESTHESIA

Abstract
The use of mechanical ventilators makes it necessary to render the patient apneic. The technique of using muscle relaxants to accomplish this aim has several disadvantages. One of the main disadvantages is the potential masking of inadequate planes of general anesthesia by the total neuromuscular blockade. The advent of narcotic antagonists made a new approach possible. Not only is the apnea produced by narcotic analgesics readily and predictably reversible but also the depth of general anesthesia is enhanced. Although this technique has been successfully employed in a large series of cases, it must still be considered in the experimental stage.
