Abstract
Eye gnats of the genus Hippelates are found from the southeastern United States to central Texas and California. Hippelates collusor is the dominant species from Texas to California (Dawson, 1960, Amer. J. aphthal . 49 : 801–08), while Hippelates pusio is most common in Georgia and the southeastern United States (Bengston, 1933, Pub. Hlth Rept 48 : 917–26). Since the prevalence of H. pusio coincides with the seasonal incidence of severe acute conjunctivitis in young children, this insect has been implicated in the transmission of the bacterium, Haemophilus aegyptius , commonly associated with the disease (Davis & Pittman, 1950, Amer. J. Dis. Child 79 : 211–22; Dow & Hines, 1957, Pub. Hlth Rept 72 : 441–48). Because of this association, the aerobic and microaerophilic bacterial flora of H. pusio was studied to determine if H. aegyptius was present. Keywords
