Abstract
The marine ciliate Parafoleiculina amphora passes its food from the bottom of the peristomial funnel through an esophagus into the endoplasm. Often when the food is minute particles they accumulate in a sac formed by the floor of the funnel and this is then cut off to proceed down the esophagus as a food vacuole. The time between successive cut-offs of food vacuoles is about 2 minutes. This rate is modified by temp. so that increase from around 20[degree] to near 30 [degree]C leads to a doubling of the rate of ingestion. Similar results were obtained by Metalnikow for paramecium. Presumably fibrils in the walls of the esophagus act like flag-ella in the endoplasm of many other ciliates to cut off and to propel the food vacuoles through the esophageal tract and presumably it is these that are influenced by temperature changes.
