Abstract
We obtain a class of metrics for straight gauged cosmic strings which accounts for their birth in a wide variety of backgrounds. The near field approximates suitably the well-known metric of an eternal cosmic string, and is transmuted at horizon distances into a repulsive string field with a gravitational shock. The model contains a built-in discussion of the compensation setting in and evolution: a self-similar rarefaction wave with constant mass per unit length is found. Keywords
