Abstract
The surface impedance at 1 kMc/sec of superconducting Sn has been investigated as a function of temperature, , and of static magnetic field, , both longitudinal and transverse to the rf current. The following unexpected phenomena have been observed. The rf resistance, , and the reactance, , may each decrease with increasing . A decreasing and an increasing may coexist. A variation of either the crystalline or static field orientation with respect to the rf magnetic field can change the sign of [] and of []. For K, both and are monotonically increasing functions of . In this range of , the approximation of a quadratic dependence for on longitudinal and transverse becomes increasingly unsatisfactory with decreasing . The quadratic coefficient of the variation of with longitudinal also decreases with decreasing , but the corresponding coefficient in transverse increases, . The relation between these unexpected behaviors and previous experimental and theoretical studies is discussed.
