Monoclinic-amorphous-cubic phase transitions in tetracyanoethylene under high pressure

Abstract
On heating at 318 K, tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) undergoes a sluggish first-order transition from the cubic to the monoclinic phase which is irreversible on cooling at atmospheric pressure. Using x-ray diffraction we have now observed phase transitions at high pressures at 295 K from the monoclinic to an amorphous structure and then to the cubic structure. A consistent picture of phase transitions in TCNE is obtained on the basis of these results and those of earlier Raman scattering experiments.
