(First of Two Parts)THE emergence of oncology as a medical subspecialty has been closely allied to the development of effective antineoplastic chemotherapy. Basic research into tumor-cell biochemistry and the effects of various antitumor agents have contributed markedly to this effort, and in recent years clinical pharmacology has become increasingly important in dealing with problems of host toxicity, tumor sensitivity and resistance, and therapeutic scheduling.
