Abstract
Six phenolic extractives (I-VI) responsible for the yellow specks which appeared on the surface of the bleached sulfate pulp as a new type of pitch trouble were isolated from the wood of Sepetir paya (Pseudosindora palustris Sym.), and identified as methyl ferulate (I), methyl p-coumarate (II), butein (III), sulfuretin (V), rengasin (VI), and a new compound pseudosindorin (IV), 2,3'',4,5-tetrahydroxy chalcone, respectively. I-VI carry a common C6-C3 skeleton, i.e., phenyl-.alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated-.gamma.-carbonyl group in the molecule. The presence of this common skeleton might have significant effects upon chemical conversions of I-VI during the cooking and the following bleaching stages resulting in the formation of the yellow pitch specks. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
