Abstract
One hundred instances of erosion or ulceration of the esophagus were observed in 1726 consecutive autopsies (5.8%). These lesions have been classified chiefly according to their histopathology as (1) infarcts, or as (2) peptic, (3) stasis, (4) traumatic, (5) phlegmonous and (6) uremic types. The clinical correlations and pathogenesis were considered, especially with regard to the significance of vascular narrowing, shock, and nervous reflexes in the development of infarcts and ulcers. Keywords
