Abstract
A satisfactory method for sampling house fly, Musca Domestica L., population densities in East Africa must take account of the numbers out-of-doors. A type of flytrap, coated with an adhesive (90 parts Stickem® and 10 parts Permanently Tacky AdhesiveR) resistant to natural weather conditions and convenient for outdoor use, is described. The relative merits of the Scudder grill and the sticky flytrap, for outdoor use under East African conditions, were compared at Muheza near Tanga. The sticky-fly trap method sampled larger numbers of flies and yielded more information on the qualitative aspects of the fly population: thus M. d. calleva Walker, M. d. curviforceps Sacca and Rivosecchi, and M. sorbens Wiedemann could be counted separately. The 2 techniques used in conjunction yielded information on fly movements and resting sites. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
