Abstract
The mean cell length along a differentiating internode and allied changes in the activities of β-glucosidase, α- and β-galactosidase. α-mannosidase and acid invertase, together with the contents of reducing and non-reducing sugars, were examined in pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum L. Leeke cv. BJ-104). The specific activities of cytoplasmic α-mannosidase, wall β-glucosidase, and cytoplasmic and wall acid invertase showed close relationships with the rate of cell elongation. The linear regressions of the rate of cell elongation, and the specific activities of wall β-glucosidase and cytoplasmic and wall invertase showed significant positive correlations (PP<0·01). The results are discussed in the light of cell wall loosening and the provision of carbon substrates for cell elongation. Keywords
