Abstract
Until the 1980s, methods textbooks were largely silent on the technical task of analysing qualitative data. There were a few exceptions, notably Znaniecki's (1934) classic, The Method of Sociology, but many respected qualitative methods texts, for example, Cicourel's Method and Measurement in Sociology (1964), said almost nothing on the topic. The methodologist's gaze was elsewhere - on the researcher as an advocate for research subjects, on techniques of interviewing, on the negotiation of research access, and so on.
