Tetracycline Pigmentation of Teeth

Abstract
A case is presented in which there is presumptive evidence that tetracycline hydrochloride, taken by a pregnant woman as therapy for acne vulgaris, crossed the placenta and was deposited in calcifying fetal teeth, producing yellow staining. The involved teeth fluoresced bright yellow under the Wood's light as compared with the pale blue autofluorescence of normal teeth. This phenomenon should be considered when pregnant women are treated with tetracyclines. It also applies to tetracycline therapy of the newborn.
