Technological networks and the American city: some historiographical notes

Abstract
The last two decades have witnessed the publication in the United States of a number of studies focusing on the relationship between the city and technology and the development of technological networks. Since 1970, this work has followed four principal approaches. The first approach consists primarily of studies that deal with one technology, such as transportation, sewers, and water supply rather than a cluster of technologies. These studies often explore the social impacts of the technology as if the city were malleable in form. The second approach assesses the development of structures in terms of their significance for urban space, with scholars examining particularly the evolution of materials, techniques, and styles that enabled builders to erect structures of greater size and specialization. The third approach deals with the interaction of technology, public policy and politics, especially in terms of the emergence of regulation. And, the fourth area of research explores the role of technology in the city-building process as a whole. Future work in this field will undoubtedly emphasize the interaction between technological, political and social history, as historians attempt to develop a more holistic picture of the role of technology in the urban context.Durant les deux dernières décennies, les Etats-Unis ont connu la publication d'un certain nombre d'études portant sur les relations entre la ville et la technologie, et le développement des réseaux techniques. Depuis 1970, ce travail de recherche s'est poursuivi selon quatre axes principaux. Le premier concerne essentiellement des études monographiques telles que le transport, les égouts et l'assainissement, loin de s'attacher à un ensemble de technologies. Le deuxième évalue le développement des constructions en fonction de leur signification par rapport à l'espace urbain. Des spécialistes examinent en particulier l'évolution des matériaux, des techniques et des modes qui permettent aux constructeurs d'ériger de plus grands édifices de type spécifique. Le troisième traite de l'interaction de la technologie et de la politique, surtout sur le plan de l'émergence de la régulation. Et le quatrième axe de recherche étudie le rôle de la technologie dans le système de construction urbaine dans son ensemble. A l'avenir, cette recherche s'attachera certainement à souligner l'interaction entre l'histoire technologique, politique et sociale, puisque les historiens tentent de développer une image plus holistique du rôle de la technologie dans le contexte urbain.Tarr Joel A., Konvit Joseph W., Rose Mark.
