Abstract
This is the fourth in a series of six reports produced by the Institute of Medicine and its Committee on the Consequences of Uninsurance. The earlier reports focused on the effects of uninsurance on individuals and their families, specifically in terms of lower access to care and poorer health. This report attempts to broaden the perspective and demonstrate the community-wide impacts on access to medical care and population health resulting from high uninsurance rates. A recently published fifth report, Hidden Costs, Values Lost, extends this perspective even further by discussing the economic and social costs associated with high uninsurance rates, and the sixth and final report will provide recommendations for expanding health insurance coverage. Keywords
