Abstract
It is shown that the isospin dependence of the shell-model potential gives rise to the experimentally observed "anomalous" isotopic shift of nuclear charge radii. The charge radii calculated from a Woods-Saxon potential are in qualitative agreement with experimental determinations from electron scattering and from muonic x rays. Keywords
