Abstract
The infrared spectra of 16 para-substituted phenols have been recorded between 1600 and 300 cm−1. Assignments have been made for the frequencies of the p-X-C6H4-OH molecule where X is considered as a point-mass group. These assignments were made taking into account both the Raman spectra reported in the literature and Raman spectra obtained experimentally. Disregarding the four carbon-hydrogen stretching frequencies and the oxygen-hydrogen stretching frequency, 25 of the remaining 28 frequencies of the p-X-CoH-OH group have been assigned. Nine of the assigned frequencies were found to be either substituent sensitive or characteristic of para-substituted phenols. Keywords
