Some Ecological Relations of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to Clostridium botulinum Type C

Abstract
The presence of P. aeruginosa was demonstrated in the intestinal tract of several spp. of wild ducks. The organism was also found with great regularity in soil and water samples collected in duck marshes in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah as well as at Des Lacs Lake, N. Dakota. Great 02-consuming and alkali-producing properties of the organisms were noted. C. botulinum type C could be grown and elaborate toxin in aerobic media when P. aeruginosa was added. This was demonstrated in test tube media as well as in Salicornia rubra, Potamogeton pectinatus and Cladophora sp. or mixtures thereof without previous sterilization. Escherichia coli also has great O2-consuming capacity but is antagonistic to C. botulinum, E. coli was outgrown by P. aeruginosa. Bacteria-free botulinus toxin was not destroyed when mixed with broth culture of P. aeruginosa.
