Comparing Elderly Mentally Retarded and Non-mentally Retarded Individuals: Who Are They? What Are Their Needs?

Abstract
Physical and behavior surveys were done for three groups of elderly subjects: Mentally retarded persons (MR) residing in an intermediate care facility (ICF), non-MR persons in an ICF, and non-MR persons in the community. Results indicated that non-MR residents may require more time of the facility staff and may cause more problems than the elderly MR residents. Reasons for these findings and their relationship to appropriate placement for the elderly individual are discussed. Future research should include a community retarded group, a group of unemployed elderly persons living in the community, and use of more objective survey methods.
