Abstract
The respiration of rat brain tissue in glucose, lactate, pyruvate or fructose is increased by 0.1 M KC1. Glucose is oxidized at RQ 1. The order of activity of the alkali metals added as chloride is Li, Na < Rb, Cs, K, these 3 being about equal. Ca and Mg lower the respiration, K raises it. When Na is the only cation the respiration is at first high but falls; there is also a very high aerobic formation of lactic acid. The effect is like that of excess KCl. The anaerobic glu-colysis also falls. These effects (not found with other normal or tumor tissues studied) are considered to be due to changes in colloidal state. Attention is drawn to similarities of brain with muscle in response to changes in the medium. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
