Abstract
We argue that the formation of patterns in diffusion-limited aggregation on a linear substrate, as studied by Vicsek, is essentially just the short-time instabilities in the Saffman-Taylor problem of hydrodynamics. Predictions about the wavelength of the pattern are made and checked against the numerical data. Keywords
