Abstract
Urines (152) from 26 male premature infants were examined for reducing sugars by paper chromatography; 77 urines were positive. Twenty babies excreted glucose, galactose, lactose and xylose or combinations of these on one or more occasions. Blood was examined after milk feedings in 10 infants. In one, galactose was found and in another, lactose. It is concluded that premature infants are unable to metabolize lactose and galactose fully. Keywords
