TOXIC ASPECT OF MOLYBDENUM IN VEGETATION

Abstract
The Mo content of 50 plants, expressed as MOO3, ranged from "none detected" in hickory and scrub oak leaves from Maryland to 137 ppm. in pea seeds from a high Se area in Colombia, S. America. Mo is taken up by vegetation under alkaline soil conditions, but only slightly under acid soil conditions. In this respect it behaves similarly to Se and opposite to Mn, B, Zn, and Cu. The Mo content of grains from a high Se area in Colombia was so high as to raise the question as to the contribution Mo makes toward the observed toxicity of grains from this area.
